Hiring a Software Development Company in Pakistan: A Buyer's Checklist

Pakistan has a deep pool of engineering talent — and, like anywhere, a mix of excellent and disappointing vendors. This checklist helps you tell them apart before you sign.

Pakistan has become a serious destination for software work. Universities produce a large number of computer science graduates every year, English is widely used in business, and the country's IT exports have grown steadily. Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi each have established software houses alongside a fast-growing freelance community.

The talent is real. What varies is process, communication and accountability — the things that decide whether a project ships. This checklist is what we would want a client to ask us.

1. Choose the right engagement model

ModelBest whenYou manage
Team augmentationYou have a product team and need more handsDay-to-day priorities and code review
Dedicated teamYou want a stable squad owning one productRoadmap and acceptance
Full outsourcingYou want an outcome delivered end to endGoals, milestones and sign-off

Mismatched models cause more failed projects than weak engineers do. If you have no technical person in-house, choose full outsourcing with clear milestones rather than "hiring two developers" you cannot direct.

2. Plan around time zones

Pakistan Standard Time is UTC+5 with no daylight saving. That gives a natural overlap with the UK and Europe in the afternoon, and with the Gulf for most of the day. For US clients, the overlap usually comes from your morning and the team's evening. Agree on a fixed daily overlap window — even two hours — and a written update at the end of every working day.

3. Check the work, not the portfolio slides

  • Ask for live products you can open and use, not just screenshots.
  • Ask who exactly will work on your project, and speak with them before signing.
  • Ask for a reference from a client with a project similar to yours.
  • Consider a paid pilot — a one- or two-week task that shows how the team communicates and delivers.

4. Get the contract basics right

  • IP ownership: all code, designs and data belong to you on payment, stated explicitly.
  • Source code access: code lives in a repository you own (or can access) from the first week.
  • Milestones: payments tied to working, demonstrable features.
  • Confidentiality: an NDA covering your data and business information.
  • Exit terms: what happens to code, documentation and accounts if either side ends the project.

5. Red flags to walk away from

  • A fixed price for a large project before anyone asked you detailed questions.
  • No access to the code until the final payment.
  • Every answer is "yes" — no pushback on scope, risks or timelines.
  • Weekly updates that describe effort ("worked on the login") instead of results you can try.
  • The people in the sales call disappear once the contract is signed.

6. Make the first two weeks count

Good projects start with a short discovery: agreed user journeys, a written scope, a design direction, and a delivery plan with dates. By the end of week two you should be able to see something running, however small. If you cannot, raise it then — not in month three.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to outsource software development to Pakistan?

Yes, when you work with an established company, own your code repository from day one, sign a clear contract covering IP and confidentiality, and pay against working milestones.

What time zone is Pakistan in?

Pakistan Standard Time (PKT) is UTC+5 and does not observe daylight saving time. Teams often arrange a daily overlap window with clients in Europe, the Gulf or North America.

Which engagement model should I choose?

Choose team augmentation if you have your own technical lead, a dedicated team for a long-running product, and full outsourcing if you want an outcome delivered end to end against milestones.
